A Short Biography on Marilyn

A Short Biography on Marilyn

Marilyn Flores was born and raised in San Diego California where the sun is always shining. She is the 3rd of 5 children. When she was about 9 years old when the saddest moment in her life occurred. She lost her home and became homeless. It was her mother, her brother who is 1 year older than her and her baby sister. They struggled very much and had to go from shelter to shelter. It was about 6 different ones in 2 years. Marilyn had been homeless for quite a while and has also been going to the summit schools since she was in 4th grade. She was sad because she felt like she never got to live a normal childhood. When she became a teenager she didn’t really mind as much, she made some friends and now they are like family to her. She didn’t feel so bad because there were others who were in the same situation as her. Marilyn finished elementary, her freshman year, her sophomore year and her junior year in the summit schools and right now she is in the process of finishing her senior year at Lindsay. She is very close and she is not giving up.

Marilyn is currently 7 months pregnant with a baby girl. She will be blessed with an angel on the 3rd of February. Marilyn has made some goals for herself. She is currently living with her boyfriend who is also the father of the baby that Marilyn is expecting. The goals that Marilyn has made for herself are to finish high school and also to hoping to get a job before her baby is born and of course after she is done with school. Marilyn visits her mother every now and then. Her mother is once again living in a shelter but his time is with Marilyn’s little brother who is 6 years old and her sister who is now 8 years old. It’s heartbreaking for Marilyn to see them where they are at but it’s the only place that can help them, for now. Her 2 older brothers are currently living together with roommates they still keep in touch with Marilyn but they don’t get to talk very often.

After high school Marilyn plans to take care of her baby by supporting her in getting a job. The father will help but they will need all the income they can get. They are planning on renting a house or apartment and buying a car as soon as they have enough money saved up for them to do that. They are not planning on staying with their roommates for a long time. Marilyn’s boyfriend will still be working, he has 2 jobs and he is hoping for it to stay that way. Marilyn is also planning to go to college when her baby is little older. She will get the help of her mother and her mother-in-law to watch over their baby while they are at work or in school.

The Art in Tonga

*In Tonga they have 2 traditional types of crafts they have the women's and the men's.

*In pre-contact Tonga women did not do the cooking or work in fields, they raised children, gathered shellfish on the reef, and made koloa, barkcloth and mats, which were a traditional form of wealth exchange at marriages and other ceremonila occasions.

*Among the typical koloa are:
-Bark cloth, or tapa
-Mats
-Waist mats
-Waist girdles
-And any other type of traditional clothing
* Weaving is what this art is called and it's one of the women's traditional craft.

*Some of the Art that the men did include:
*Woodcarving
*Canoe-building
*Traditional Architecture
*And Tattooing

Woodcarving
*Before western contact, many objects of daily use were made of carved wood for example:
-food bowls
-head rests
-war clubs
-spears
-and cult images

Tongan craftsmen were skilled at inlaying pearl-shell and ivory wood.

Canoe-building
*Tongan craftsmen were also adept at building canoes. Many canoes for daily use were simple dug-out canoes, shaped from a single log with fire and adze and outfitted with a single outrigger.

Traditional architechture
*The tradition Tongan fale consisted of a curved roof, which are branches lashed with sennit
and rope thatched with woven palm leaves, that rested on pillars made of tree trunks.
Woven screens filled in the area between the ground and the edge of the roof. They made
these roof s to survive hurricanes.

Tatooing
*Pre-contact Tongan males were often heavily tattooed. The practice of Tatatau dissapeared under heavy missionary dispproval , but was never completely suppressed. It is still very common for men to be decorated with some small tattoos. Nevertheless it is more popular for youngsters nowadays. They would tattoo their shoulders, wrists, ankles, legs, arms etc. They would often tattoo the high school that they went to, or the initials of one's name.

Words I dont know:
cult:a particular system of religious worship, esp. with reference to its rites and ceremonies.
adept:a skilled or proficient person; expert.
adze:An axlike tool with a curved blade at right angles to the handle, used for shaping wood
suppressed:To put an end to forcibly;

NO ON PROP 4

PROP 4:

IS TRYING TO SAY THAT MINOR (UNDER 18) WOMAN MUST GET PERMISSION BEFORE GETTING AN ABORTION.

I PERSONALLY VOTED NO ON PROP 4 BECAUSE I DONT THINK THAT WOMAN UNDER THE AGE OF 18 SHOULD HAVE TO ASK PERMISSION WETHER TO GET AN ABORTION OR NOT. IT SHOULD BE UP TO THEM WETHER THEY WANT TO KEEP THE BABY OR NOT. SOMETIMES WHEN YOU ASK A PARENT PERMISSION THEY MIGHT NOT GIVE YOU THE CONSENT YOU WANT. SOME GIRLS WANT TO KEEP THEIR BABIES SOME DON'T. SOME FEEL LIKE THEY'RE READY SOME DON'T. IM COMPLETELY AGAINST ABORTION BUT REALLY IT SHOULD BE UP THE PARENT.

Speech against the Spanish

The quote i picked goes like this:

" Are you not bound to love them as you love yourselves? Don't you understand this? Don't you feel this?"

To me it was powerful because it shows that some one cares about these people...and it tells the people who mistreated the natives that they should give people a chance.... and to love them as they love them selves they are humas

My life as a Taino

People on my Island are getting along they are eating healthy and we are not enslaved by anyone... we fougt for what was ours and they left us alone. People attack us once in a while but we defend ourselves and lately they havent harmed us yet. our Island is well taken care of and we are not suffering any abuses. powerful people still come to our Island and try to take over but we dont let it happen. To the right is a picture of what we look like in our Island.
